One of the most beautiful places in the world is the Dominican Republic. That’s why I came for an entire month (October 2025) to firsthand experience all the vacation areas this country offers.

During that month I stayed at 14 resorts and 2 urban hotels, all except RIU Bavaro Palace were paid for by me, so I can tell you exactly what each area is like (Punta Cana, Cap Cana, La Romana and Santo Domingo) without filters, without ads, and without depending on collaborations.

I recommend spending at least 5 minutes reading this guide so that you don’t end up booking a “nice” hotel in an unsafe area or in a place that isn’t what you’re looking for in your vacation.

1. Punta Cana: The most complete vacation area

Punta Cana is the most famous area of the Dominican Republic and, probably, the one you’ve seen most often in ads and photos. According to official data from the Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Economy, 70% of the country’s tourists arrive via Punta Cana Airport.

Here are some of the most beautiful beaches in the country and many of the most famous vacation resorts (Hard-Rock, Melia, Lopesan, Iberostar, Nickelodeon, RIU, etc).

There are 3 main areas in Punta Cana:

Bavaro: where the vast majority of resorts are located. Tons of hotels close together. You can find reasonable prices due to the greater supply of hotels.

Uvero Alto: northern area of Punta Cana. New resorts with high prices but extraordinary quality.

Cap Cana: The most luxurious and exclusive area of the Dominican Republic. Get your wallet ready, as prices here are high year-round.

Who is Punta Cana for?

In my experience, Punta Cana is suitablefor everyone. Couples, friends, or families looking for anything from budget 3* hotels by the sea to luxury 5-star resorts with butlers and gourmet restaurants.

Pros and Cons of Punta Cana

✅ It’s the most well-maintained tourist area

✅ You have resorts of all types and all prices

✅ In low season, you can find luxury resorts at budget prices (I did it! haha)

✅ The airport is 25 minutes away by taxi

✅ It’s a very safe area

❌ Don’t trust the stars, some 5* luxury hotels are a disaster

❌ Sargassum lasts from May to October

❌ The sea has eaten some beaches and are very small

If you don’t want to go crazy looking for the best hotel, you can do two things. Either click the link to see all resorts with good reviews, or choose one of the ones I stayed at and liked, which is a sure bet.

✅ RIU Palace Bávaro (my full review here): My rating is 8.7/10. Recommended for couples or friends. Incredible parties, plus relaxation areas, gourmet restaurants, and the most beautiful decor I’ve seen in a vacation hotel. Yes, I recommend it.

❔ Whala Bávaro: My rating is 6.9/10. Only recommended if you’re looking for a budget hotel. It’s very cheap.

✅Dreams Royal Beach (my full review here): My rating is 8.8/10. Highly recommended. Plus, the price is usually lower than that of other 5-star hotels.

Amazing food, romantic atmosphere, and very friendly staff (more so than other luxury resorts).

❌ Occidental Punta Cana (read my full review here): My rating is 6.9/10. The category is 5 stars, but for me it’s 4 stars. Food and shows are below average. Clean and comfortable room. I don’t recommend it.

✅ Royalton Hideaway: My rating is 8.7/10. It has an adults-only area and also a water park for kids at the neighboring hotel that you can access. Good food, good shows, and a high-quality all-inclusive. Yes, I recommend it.

❔ Grand Sirenis Punta Cana (my full review here): My rating is 7.8/10. Mixed bag. It’s mainly for families. Parents don’t have as many options as in other hotels. Food is fine, staff is fine. I only recommend it if you get a good deal.

✅Nickelodeon Punta Cana (my full review here): My rating is 8.7/10. A luxury hotel to go with young children. If you have the budget, I recommend it because it’s fantastic and your kids will remember it for their whole lives.

✅ Breathless Punta Cana (my full review here): My rating is 9.0/10. An adults-only luxury hotel that combines partying and relaxation. I loved everything: food, service, parties, relaxation areas, beach… The best rating in Punta Cana. ✅ Wyndham Alltra Punta Cana (my full review here): My rating is 8.5/10. A super luxurious hotel, 10/10 service, spectacular food, and super beautiful. I would definitely stay here again, and I recommend it.

✅ Royalton Chic Punta Cana: My rating is 8.3/10. A hotel to party with your partner or friends. Very good atmosphere, pools, lovely beach…

They need to improve the variety in the food, which I give a 7.5/10. I recommend it if you’re looking for an adults-only hotel with a lively atmosphere at a reasonable price.

✅ Dreams Cap Cana: My rating is 8.6/10. A luxury hotel in an exclusive area. I liked Dreams Royal Beach better. I recommend it, but if Dreams Royal or Meliá Punta Cana has lower prices, choose them instead.

❌ Lopesan Bávaro (read my full review and why we do not recommend the hotel): My rating is 7.8/10. A very expensive luxury hotel that’s not worth it (I spent $900 for 2 nights and left disappointed).

The workers are unprofessional, and the food quality is average for a 5-star hotel. The good thing is that it has endless activities for families. I don’t recommend it.

My personal recommendation in Punta Cana: Meliá Punta Cana Beach

As I mentioned before, I’ve stayed (and paid) at 15 of the 16 resorts (only RIU invited me for 2 nights) where I stayed in the Dominican Republic, which is why I recommend Meliá Punta Cana Beach because I really loved it.

For me, it’s one of the best if you’re looking for:

• Tranquility and romantic atmosphere

• Excellent food (above average compared to other 5-star resorts)

• Activities inside the resort without hassles

• Adult/couple-friendly environment, elegant, quiet, without crowds

If you’re coming as a couple and looking for a nice, spacious resort with excellent cuisine, for me, it’s the top in Punta Cana, and I would stay there again without hesitation.

2. Cap Cana: Luxury, exclusivity and great security

Cap Cana is the most exclusive, luxurious, and well-maintained area of the entire Dominican Republic. To enter, you have to pass through a private security checkpoint, and then each hotel’s security awaits you.

The beaches here are wider, quieter, and bigger.

The atmosphere is clearly premium: new hotels, impeccable areas, meticulously maintained gardens, gourmet restaurants included in the resort, and a more adult and demanding clientele.

That said, prices are very high. We booked Dreams Cap Cana because it was the most affordable luxury resort in the area… and even so, we paid $320/night, while the rest of the resorts are around $450 in low season and $600 in high season… Crazy!

If you’re looking for exclusive, premium, and 100% safe vacations, Cap Cana is the ideal area.

Pros and Cons of staying in Cap Cana

✅ Very luxurious and exclusive resorts

✅ Wider and better maintained beaches

✅ Gourmet restaurants inside the resort

✅ Very close to the airport

❌ The price is exaggerated for me

Who is Cap Cana for?

According to my experience, Cap Cana is ideal for families or couples who don’t have budget issues and are always looking for the most exclusive.

Hotels and Resorts in Cap Cana

I stayed at Dreams Cap Cana, but, honestly, I liked Dreams Royal Resort in Bávaro much better for that price.

So, I’m going to give you several options in Cap Cana, but get your wallet ready because they’re premium resorts…

• Eden Roc Cap Cana: About $900 USD / night.

• Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana: About $800 USD / night.

• Secrets Cap Cana: About $700 USD / night.

3. La Romana Area: Beautiful beaches, more affordable prices and unique sunsets

If you’re looking for a quiet, beautiful area with much lower prices than Punta Cana, La Romana-Dominicius is one of the best options in the Dominican Republic.

Here you can get beachfront resorts for half the price you’d pay in Bávaro, without losing quality or services.

During my trip, I stayed at Sunscape Dominicus, a comprehensive resort that exceeded our expectations: excellent food, friendly staff, and one of the most beautiful beaches with the best color in the country.

Pros and Cons of staying in La Romana

✅ Cheaper resorts than Bávaro with good quality

✅ Wider and more beautiful beaches

✅ Beautiful sunsets due to its location

✅ Lively atmosphere (but without stress or noise) even in low season due to its good prices

✅ Good connection to both airports (Las Américas and Punta Cana)

❌ Not as much partying as in Punta Cana

❌ The resort offering is smaller so there are fewer options

Who is La Romana for?

According to my experience, La Romana – Dominicus is ideal for families and couples looking for quality-price in their vacation.

My personal recommendation in La Romana: Sunscape Dominicus La Romana

As I mentioned before, I paid for 15 out of 16 resorts (only RIU invited me for 2 nights) where I stayed in the Dominican Republic, so if I recommend Sunscape Dominicus La Romana, it’s because I really loved it.

For me, it’s one of the best if you’re looking for:

• Peace and atmosphere at an affordable price(I paid $126/night)
• Family or couple-friendly atmosphere. Atmosphere.

If you’re looking for an affordable, nice resort with friendly service, this hotel is perfect.

4. Santo Domingo: Culture, history and somewhat unsafe

Santo Domingo is the capital of the country and a city with a rich history, museums, restaurants, and an atmosphere throughout the day. Here you’ll find hotels for all budgets, from $50 USD per night options to $200 USD hotels with very high standards.

During my stay, I stayed at Intercontinental Santo Domingo and Catalonia Santo Domingo. Both seemed like two great hotels to me. Comfortable and with excellent service, but they’re around 170–190 USD per night, which is the usual price for this type of hotel.

What impression did Santo Domingo give me?

I’ll tell you with total honesty: outside the tourist area, the city feels unsafe and neglected. They throw papers and bottles on the ground or into the sea instead of waiting and throwing them in the trash.

Some businesses don’t take care of them and are a bit dirty in the center.

Do I recommend Santo Domingo?

Yes. Spend the last night in Santo Domingo and visit the Colonial Zone to learn about the architecture and history behind this country if you’re going to catch a plane from Las Américas Airport.

If your idea is pure relaxation and history doesn’t interest you much either, it’s no big deal to skip Santo Domingo on your trip.

Keep in mind that the Punta Cana-Santo Domingo bus takes 3 hours. So, depending on how much you like history and architecture, it will be worth it or not.

Hotels in Santo Domingo

I’ve stayed at two hotels that are excellent. So I recommend them if you have a high budget. If not, you can review the list of good hotels at lower prices.

Catalonia Santo Domingo: About $190 usd per night.

There’s everything:

From 50-70 USD per night in Santo Domingo

In Bávaro Punta Cana, you can find excellent 5-star hotels between 250 and 450 USD, depending on the season.

In Dominicus, there are all-inclusive beachfront resorts for half the price of Bávaro ($150-$220)

5. What area is best for families with children?

6. Do I need a rental car to get around?
