If you’re looking for where to stay in Punta Cana and you want to get away from mass tourism, there’s only one answer: Cap Cana. It’s the luxury spot of the Dominican Republic, a private area with security, spotless beaches and a much more exclusive atmosphere.

The problem is that staying here normally costs an arm and a leg (between €500 and €1,000 a night). But this is where the Dreams Cap Cana Resort & Spa comes in.

We paid about €319 a night, which makes it the most “affordable” way into this elite area. But the big question is: does staying at the cheapest hotel in the most expensive area mean sacrificing quality?

If you’re in a hurry, here’s my executive summary: the Dreams Cap Cana is a hidden gem for couples and families with small children (under 5) who are after 10-out-of-10 service and peace and quiet, without paying the outrageous prices of its neighbors like the Hyatt or the St. Regis.

What makes the difference here isn’t just the facilities, it’s the staff. It had been a long time since I’d seen such a warm, get-it-done attitude at an “all-inclusive” outside Mexico, where I got the best treatment of all. That said, if you’re traveling with teenagers who are after partying or giant water slides, it’s going to fall short for them and I’d point you to others from my list of the best hotels with a water park in Punta Cana.

So you can see it clearly at a glance:

✅ The best

• The staff: I have to name Michael (bellboy), who sorts everything out; Jonathan at the spa; and above all Luis Abreu, a bartender who is an artist. Along with the whole entertainment team, who try to get you dancing, playing ping-pong, playing volleyball — in short, they all get a smile out of you.
• Top gym: if you’re a gym rat, you’re going to be blown away. It has a multipower, a TRX area, a punching bag and specific leg machines that you rarely see in hotels.
• Quality of the drinks: real signature cocktails, no cheap bulk stuff. They’ll even make you cocktails that aren’t on the menu.
• Premium location: you’re in Cap Cana, the security and the surroundings are on another level.

❌ The worst

• Not much fun for teenagers: there are no big water slides and no strongly marked “teen” atmosphere.
• The beach (depends on the season): the beach is beautiful, but in October (low season) the sargassum affected us quite a bit and I missed a bit more cleaning of the sand on those days.
• Variety at lunch: even though the quality is good, the midday buffet could rotate its dishes a bit more.

The hotel sits in the Playa Juanillo area, famous for being one of the most beautiful in the DR.

• The beach: It’s wide, white sand, with that exclusive Cap Cana touch. That said, I have to be honest: going in October, the sargassum played a dirty trick on us. Even though the setting is idyllic, in low season the seaweed cleaning wasn’t as intensive as I would have liked. In high season, this is usually like a giant turquoise-blue lake.
• The big main pool: it’s huge, it runs through most of the resort almost all the way to the end. This is where life happens: you’ve got the entertainment team running activities (without being invasive) and one detail I loved: a bar with swings inside the water. Having a drink sitting there is the classic photo you have to take, no question.
• The “Beach Vibe” pool: right on the front line, it has a slightly more adult atmosphere (although kids can go in). Here the music picks up the pace a bit and it has its own swim-up bar.
• VIP area and splash pool: There’s a third big area exclusively for Preferred Club (VIP) guests. For anyone traveling with babies or very small children, there’s a little splash pool placed strategically near the main one so they’re safe.

One point in its favor: the cleanliness. The water was crystal clear in every area, which is much appreciated.

Beyond the pools, it really surprised me how well they look after the common areas so you can genuinely switch off. It’s not just concrete and water; the landscape design is very well done:

• Hammock area on sand: They have a beautiful area with beach sand (but inside the grounds, away from the shore) with a lot of vegetation. The best part is that it has natural shade from the trees, perfect for reading a book or taking a nap without frying in the sun.
• The jacuzzis: Spread around the resort, we found several outdoor jacuzzis. Unlike other hotels where they’re usually packed or the water is cloudy, here they were spotless and, since there were few people, we got to enjoy them almost in private.

It depends on your children’s age.

• For small children (up to 5): YES. The hotel works very well for them, it’s manageable, the staff are lovely with the little ones, but most of the time you’ll have to take charge yourself.
• For teenagers: NO. If your kids are after big thrills, giant water parks or a lot of action, they’re going to get bored. I’d recommend a hotel where you can be comfortable with older kids, like the RIU Palace Bávaro, with one of the best water parks and a nighttime scene.

We stayed in a room almost at the entrance. The resort layout is very convenient; everything is close by:

• To the pools: 1 minute.
• Reception (in case something unexpected comes up): 1 min.
• To the beach: 3 minutes.
• To the restaurants: 3 minutes (in the opposite direction from the beach).

The room itself is very good, close to excellent: a very comfortable bed, a big, good-looking bathroom, and high-quality amenities (shower gel, shampoo), none of those generic bottles that leave your hair like a scouring pad. The only “but”: since I’m very picky, I saw a few drops of paint on the terrace that took the shine off the finish a little, but nothing that ruins the stay.

Housekeeping (nice and rude): there was one lady who wasn’t friendly with us at all and, even though she saw us and knew it was our room, she didn’t open it for us the day the key card stopped working. I had to go to reception to get it changed. That said, when I got back, another girl had done them the favor and they’d already opened it for us.

This is where the Dreams Cap Cana puffs out its chest against the competition.

1. The Italian restaurant (Portofino): It was, without a doubt, our favorite. We went back several times. Not just for the food, which was delicious, but for the service.

• The story: the bartender at this restaurant is a star. We asked him for a cocktail that wasn’t on the menu, just by telling him the ingredients we felt like having. He said “Perfect, I’ll make it,” and the result was better than the original I remembered. An absolute 10.

2. Cocktails in general: The level is high in every bar. You can tell there are professionals like Luis Abreu behind it. If you like to drink well, you’re not going to suffer here with undrinkable sugary mixes.

3. Breakfast and lunch: Breakfast is good quality, varied and with well-prepared products. Lunch does the job although, as I said in the cons, a bit more variety wouldn’t hurt.

• The spa: if you’ve never been to a spa, take my word for it and try the basic circuit. The design is spectacular, with cold plunge pools, saunas and jacuzzis that leave you feeling brand new. There are several price levels (some include a massage at the end), but with the basic one you already come out floating. Jonathan treated us wonderfully.
• The gym: as I told you above, it’s very complete, even if it isn’t huge. It has everything you need to train properly (even decent leg equipment, which is rare to see).

After looking at all of it, here’s my straight conclusion.

It’s for you if:

• You’re after luxury and exclusivity, but your budget doesn’t stretch to €600 a night. If your budget is higher and you want more quality, this is one of the best hotels in the whole Caribbean.
• You’re traveling as a couple or with small children and you value peace and quiet.
• You’re demanding about how the staff treat you and about the quality of the cocktails.
• You’re a fitness lover and you don’t skip your training even on vacation.
